I’ve mentioned before that I follow the Nova Scotia Brid Society on Facebook. I’m not what you would call an avid birder, but I do like to have an idea what sort of things are around me. And sometimes it’s fun to see what others are finding. And not just birds we might normally see around here.
Not long ago, there was a bit of a fuss of a purple gallinule that appeared in the area. It is a rather colourful wading type bird that it not native to this area, but likely came in with one of the storms. Although I am not the type to drop everything to try to see this unusual visitor, there seemed to be many who did, and posted their pictures on the page. Which is great for those of us who are more casual observers. You get to see the bird without driving all over the countryside.
Lately, the big thing seems to have been the Liverpool Limpkin. Well, it’s a limpkin. And it happens to be near Liverpool. Hanging around the sculpture garden behind Cosby’s Garden Centre. Again, even though I live fairly close, I haven’t actually gone looking for it. But I have seen plenty of pictures.
Again, this is a bird that lives in more tropical areas that has found it’s way here. And hopefully will figure out which way is south and be able to get back.
In some ways, I feel a bit sorry for the bird. It got caught in a storm and ha somehow become the subject of dozens of people looking to take its picture. And all it seems to want is to find a good meal. And maybe a map.
It is rather exciting to see things like this around the area, and this time of year, as birds start to head south, we can chance across all kinds of interesting birds we might not see on a regular basis as they make their way through.
There are a lot of interesting birds out there. If you can get them to hold still long enough to get a good look at them.
