There were some options discussed. With Thanksgiving coming up this weekend, we usually try to gather the family for a dinner before everyone gets busy heading into the fall and the holidays. Hopefully, we all get to gather once again at that point. But I’m sure a lot of people know what it’s like. Lives tend to get pretty busy at times.
There were a few options. We thought about a nice roast of beef. When you start to break it down, a good cut of beef would likely end up cheaper than a turkey these days. Or maybe a large roasting chicken. Or perhaps a big feed of scallops.
There are a lot of options for that special family dinner. And while since we don’t have a huge family, we can make most of them fit the occasion. But turkey is something we don’t have often.
Although it is difficult to find the right size bird. You don’t want to be eating it for a week, so not too big. But you do want some leftovers for sandwiches and probably another meal. Just not six other meals. So size will make a difference. And could be part of why we settled on turkey.
With something like lobsters and scallops, it would be unlikely to have leftovers. Although a big part of the idea of leftovers, at least for me, is if you spend an entire day putting together a big feast, it’s nice to be able to take a day where you don’t have to do a lot of meal prep. You can just reheat. So leftovers are an important part.
But that could also work well with a ham or a large beef roast.
In guess a big part of it comes down to the fact that we don’t have turkey that often, which is part of why it seems special. Smaller hams or roasts of beef aren’t that hard to come by, so they can be more a part of the regular menu. A turkey almost demands a special occasion. Like Christmas. Or Thanksgiving.
So we’re going to go for it. Although my usual tip of the hat to my own harvest, the cranberries, will likely not be something I pick myself this year. Since they plants are still under water and didn’t get a chance to produce many berries this year, I guess we’ll have to make do berries from the store.
But for the main course, it looks like turkey. As long as the power stays on.
