I watched carefully over the weekend. Never saw a hummingbird. Not one. But, are they gone?
It’s hard to tell. They can be pretty sneaky. Showing up when you least expect it. And this time of year, it might not be the regulars you’ve had all summer. It could be a ew just grabbing a snack on the way through.
So I haven’t taken my feeder in for the year quite yet. I put out a little bit of food in the feeder for the next few days. I’ll probably take it down on the weekend. Unless I actually spot a few around. In which case it may stay up for another few days. But time is getting short.
Only a couple weeks ago there still seemed to be quite a few around. Suddenly, it seems like most, if not all, have packed up and headed south for the winter. I’d day it must be nice to be a hummingbird, but I’m not sure I’d want to make the journey they make. It’s a long way for a little bird. Although once you watch them fighting around the feeder all summer, it doesn’t take long to realize they are not as delicate as they may look. For something so small, they are actually quite rugged.
Over the past couple of days I have seen a couple reports of birds still showing up in various areas of the province, so there could still be the odd straggler around. Probably not for long.
Almost time to put the feeder away for another year.
