We have hit September, so the days of the growing season are numbered. For me, it hasn’t really been a stellar year. I just couldn’t seem to get organized in the spring, but I did manage to get a few tomato plants in. With mixed results.
The little cherry tomatoes seem to be doing well. In fact, we’ve hit the “hard to keep up” stage. I try to graze my way through them on a daily basis, but there always seems to be more. Even the little black ones I got are doing very well and starting to ripen.
The black ones I picked up by mistake. I didn’t notice the name “Midnight Snack” until little black tomatoes started to appear. They are pretty cool looking, and pretty tasty. So I’m glad I ended up with them.
But a lot of my tomatoes are showing no sign of red at all. I’ve got plenty of them on the plants, but they are all still green. Hopefully we have time, or there could be a lot of chow-chow in my future.
But I was comparing notes with a few people over the past little while. One person mentioned their garden seems to be doing fairly well. They had more green beans than they knew what to do with. Others have said things are not going very well. For instance, they had carrots, but they are still fairly small. And their zucchini plants have yet to produce anything. Like zero zucchini.
Zucchini are known for a very different problem. Too few is rarely an issue. And while I’m sure all their family and friends are devastated they have not received tons on zucchini magically appearing on their doorstep, the weather has been a bit of an issue. Too much rain, too little sun. And I have mentioned before, armies of slugs waiting to invade.
Hopefully we get a decent September and things have a chance to finish growing. I like chow-chow, but a nice ripe tomato would be pretty tasty, too.
