I was told not long ago that I needed a new brush for the grill. I will admit, the old brush was pretty much brushless. But I use it mostly for scraping, not for actual brushing, and it was still doing that job pretty well.
But there are those who did not appreciate the job that old brush was doing. The called it “disgusting” and “filthy” and possibly a few other names I will not repeat at this time. But the end result was the old brush was taken from me and I was sent on a mission to find a new one.
There are a lot of different options in the world of barbecue brushes these days. You can get the wooden scraper, little things that appear fairly similar to a scrub pad with a handle, brushes with nylon bristles, brushes with metal bristles, things that seem to have lumps of steel wool attached, other things that remind me of a small disc harrow that would seem better suited to plowing a miniature back forty.
Let’s just say there are a lot of options.
Even though we have probably all heard that we shouldn’t use metal bristles. There have been cases where people have accidentally swallowed the bristles, leading to some nasty complications. Like little metal bristles that can get lodged in you throat or other parts of your body where you really don’t want little metal bristles. But in spite of the fact we are told not to use them, there still seem to be plenty of them available.
I went with thick nylon bristles. If they do fall out, they seem big enough that I would notice them, which makes me feel I little more comfortable about using it. Although I still like to use it as a scraper, just to make sure there are not little bits laying around.
However, there are a lot of choices when it comes to new barbecue brushes. Now if only someone would come up with a self cleaning grill.
