Did you jump this morning? Today is World Jump Day, and we were all supposed to jump at the same time to save the planet.
A person by the name of Torsten Lauschmann came up with this idea in 2006. He wanted to get six hundred million people in the Western Hemisphere to jump all at the same time. If we all did that, we could move the Earth into a different orbit, and maybe put an end to global warming.
The original plan was to get everyone to jump at exactly 11:39:13 GMT. Which I think is 8:39:13 Atlantic Time? It gets a bit confusing. And that was a part of the problem. Parts of Europe had Daylight Savings Time and other parts didn’t and people couldn’t figure out exactly when to jump, so they were jumping at different times. Which is why global warming is still an issue today.
Okay… really, it was probably never going to work anyway. The theory could work, but it’s unlikely to have much of an effect. And what happens if people on the other side of the world are jumping at the same time? Their jumps would cancel out our jumps, or even worse, there could be more people jumping on the other side and we’d move closer instead of further away and that would just make it worse. So maybe it’s a good thing it didn’t work.
But it has become a day when people can get a little exercise, while highlighting the problem of climate change.
Yes, it’s silly. But we can all use a little silly in our lives now and then.
So get jumping. It might not cure climate change, but you will get some exercise. Just don’t overdo it. It’s pretty humid out there today. But if we all jump at the right time, we might be able to fix that.
