Over the past year, none of us have been strangers to inflation and shrinkflation. It’s been all around us, and isn’t likely to stop any time soon.
I understand the need for companies to stay profitable, but it is still annoying. It can be even more annoying when you realize we may even be responsible for some of it, in a roundabout way. For those who have money in R.R.S.P.’s, it’s possible we own shares in some of these companies, and as shareholders, we are part of demanding higher profits. But I try not to think too much about that part.
Shrinkflation bothers me a bit. I’ve had a couple recipes that I have had to change because of shrinkflation, when the recipe, which was written back in the 50s and 60s, calls for a can or an ingredient. Then it doesn’t quite turn out the way it used to because the size of the can has changed.
I even noticed it with shampoo the other day. I bought my usual and when I got home I noticed I was replacing a 400 milliliter bottle with a 370 milliliter bottle. And I’m pretty sure the price had gone up as well.
There isn’t a lot we can do about it. Except find ways to adapt. But maybe I can stop being a dinosaur.
I refer to myself as a dinosaur because I do not stream television. Never have, and really don’t have much desire to. I still have cable, and it suits my needs. Until I came to the realization that I am about to lose almost a third of my TV channels, with absolutely no offer to reduce the price to match.
Maybe it’s time for me to cut the cord. I know many have and seem to get along just fine.
I may still need things like shampoo and food, but there are things I can change. And it feels like things are pushing me that way.
