It’s that time of year once again. A time that strikes fear into the hearts of many. June bug season.
There doesn’t seem to be a reason, but people really don’t like the things. They don’t bite. They don’t sting. They don’t do much that can hurt you. They’re just annoying.
And really, it’s their flight ability, or lack of flight ability, that make them so annoying. They’re just not very good at it.
That is the big issue. I’m not sure who told these things they could fly, but they’re not very good at it. The bumbling around randomly slamming into things, especially people, doesn’t endear them to many people. The fact that they don’t seem to mind bumping into people and getting stuck in their hair is just wrong.
You can’t just pin it on one bug either. “June bug” is a collective term for about eight hundred different types of scarab beetles that happen to hatch around this time of year. Prior to that, they are probably grubs living in your lawn, being dug up by raccoons and crows and skunks, ruining your lawn just by being there.
But I’m always surprised by how many people truly hate June bugs. Although I guess the only good thing about June bugs flying around is that they are no longer living in your lawn, giving other critters a reason to dig it up.
They are out there. I watched one for a while over the weekend, slamming itself repeatedly into a window. Thankfully they don’t show up in large numbers.
