Last year there was a petition. Nothing much seemed to happen, but there was a petition to ban the sale of home fireworks. This year, with the fire situation around the province, there has again been a call for a ban on the sale of home fireworks.
I really don’t have much of an opinion one way or another on this. I don’t buy fireworks. I will probably never buy fireworks. I happen to believe it would be much more thrilling to skip the fireworks and simply light a pile of money on fire. But that’s just me.
Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy a good fireworks display, but most home fireworks displays are a bit underwhelming. Mostly because a couple hundred bucks worth of pyrotechnics is never going to look like several thousand dollars worth of fireworks. So I don’t see the point. And they scare my dog, so I tend to keep away from them.
There are those who enjoy them. But, like anything, things don’t always go as planned, and I have seen a few potential dangerous moments with them. Thankfully, things turned out okay.
There are those out there who are calling for a complete ban on them.
Years ago, home fireworks were not found in Nova Scotia. I will admit I may have purchased a few packs of black market fire crackers in my youth. But there came a point where I decided I had better uses for my money.
And if our weather is going to continue to be so dry, maybe it’s time to find other ways to celebrate. Maybe a fancy upgrade to those projectors you see flashing on people’s houses at Christmas time would do the trick.
Finding an safe alternative could be a good idea.
