If you blink, you might miss them. And I think I blinked this year. I might have missed my fiddleheads for the year.
I know there were a few around. Although I’ve been told they weren’t easy to find this year and quantities seemed to be down. And I haven’t totally given up, but I think it’s getting a bit too late in the year.
It is a pretty short season. You wait for just that right moment when ostrich ferns poke through the ground but have not yet unfurled their leaves. It doesn’t take them long. But it makes for a pretty short window.
They we around. I knew they were around. But it was one of those “I’ll pick up some in a couple days”, type of things, and suddenly, as soon as I was ready for them, they disappeared. Or they seemed too. I haven’t completely given up yet. There is still a chance. Just not likely.
Once upon a time you used to be able to get frozen fiddleheads. But I haven’t seen any of those in years.
It’s my own fault. I should have grabbed them as soon as I saw them. But I didn’t. So I may have missed my chance for a good feed of one of my favourite greens this year.
So it’s looking like it might be, “Wait until next year.” At least, being a Leafs fan, I’m used to that.
