We certainly need the rain we’ve been getting over the past few days. Not only to help with the fire situation, but just in general. There were a lot of things that seemed to be a bit off because of the lack of moisture. Like lady slippers.
I hadn’t been seeing many around. I’d been looking, because this is usually the time of year you see them. Generally they start to appear around the Victoria Day weekend.
Most years I make a point of looking for both lady slippers and trilliums at this time of year. I like both of them and usually tend to find a few growing each year. But I was starting to wonder if maybe the lack of moisture was hurting them a bit.
I did find a few trillium, but not in their usual places. They were close, but where I usually find them didn’t have them this year. They’ve been pretty reliable for several years in this particular area, but the plants, while still there, didn’t seem interested in producing blooms this year.
And although I took a look in several places for lady slippers, again, I wasn’t seeing many. I saw plants, just no flowers.
Hopefully this rain helps bring the plants back to life a bit. I don’t expect them to suddenly burst into bloom just because it rained. It might be a bit too late in their season for that. But it would be nice if they manage to survive.
