There is a lot I like about spring. Birds returning, other animals becoming more active, plants starting to come back to life, flowers starting to bloom.
But there is one thing I can do without. Blackflies.
I tend to just give myself a quick spray and ignore them. Although if they are bad enough, the buzzing can be a bit annoying. Not to mention the not being able to breath part, if they get too think. Although if there are that many of them, I can always go back to wearing a face mask. Just so I don’t swallow quite so many. I don’t mind the extra protein, but there are limits.
Blackflies are one of those things that some people can deal with better than others. There are people who avoid going outdoors at this time of year because of them. I refuse to allow them to do that to me.
There are also those who seem able to ignore them. They have some sort of agreement with the flies that they ignore each other. I’m not sure how it works, but they don’t seem to be bothered by them at all.
I’m not that lucky. Blackflies will try to eat me. But I just tend to use a little squirt of DEET and I can then ignore them. They might buzz around a bit, but I don’t care. I just go about my day and ignore them. They certainly don’t ignore me. But I find ways to ignore them.
But I did notice over the weekend that they are starting to appear. It was nice to get a few days without them, but they seem determined to try to make up for it. But I’m determined to not feed them too much.
Hopefully they won’t be around too long this year.
