According to the migration map, they’re all around us. I’ve even seen a few pictures of them, supposedly from this year, showing them at various feeders around the province. And it is now May, so that is the usual time for their arrival. I even put my feeder up so it was there when they wanted it. But so far, no hummingbirds.
I’m sure they’ll be along. They always are. And it does usually take a while for them to figure out where things are supposed to be. Although they do seem to have pretty good memories.
Usually, around the first part of May, I’m not as quick getting my feeder filled and outside. They remind me. There is at least one hummingbird that will come and hover in front of my nose, letting me know how disappointed he is in my ability to get things done on time. After all, from his point of view, I had one job. Well, two, if you want to break it down. Fill the feeder. Hang it outside.
I do make my own simple syrup, but they don’t see that part. They just want it filled and hanging. And I did get it out early this year. But I haven’t seen one around it yet.
I know it won’t be long. And maybe the ones that hang out at my place got distracted along the way. Perhaps a sale at one of the outlet malls they were passing along the way.
And I do feel better about them arriving now, rather than a couple weeks ago. Magnolia’s and forsythia’s and a few other things have started to bloom, so there are flowers for them to stop at along the way. Maybe that’s why they haven’t shown up at my place yet. Too many flowers along the way.
If you’re a hummingbird, you have to stop and drink the flowers.
