As I was leaving work yesterday evening, I happened to see a crow on the lawn. He was quite intent on whatever it was he was doing. He seemed to be looking for something. He picked up a big chunk of sod and gave it a toss to the side. Which made me wonder if that was what’s been going on with my lawn.
I have holes in my lawn. Not huge holes. They are only about an inch or so around and maybe an inch or two deep. I was wondering what was making them. I’m thinking crows might be to blame.
There are other possibilities. Raccoons can also dig up a lawn. Or skunks. I haven’t seen any skunks in the area, but there are plenty of raccoons. But from what I have been able to figure out, raccoons are no where near as neat as this. If they are looking for something in a lawn, it’s quite likely to look like an excavator went through the area.
There are other possibilities. Smaller animals like moles and voles and mice and even groundhogs. Any of those and a few more could be building tunnels. But these aren’t tunnels. They are just little dead end holes.
There could be some insects that might dig holes, but I wouldn’t think those holes would be quite this size.
So I’m still thinking crows. I’ve seen them out there. I’ve even talked to them about it, but they have not yet answered.
But there are reasons. There are grubs of other various insects that could be under the surface, happily munching away on the roots of my grass. Crows, having pretty good hearing, could hear the munching and decide these little grubs and larvae would make a tasty snack. So they are digging up grubs in my lawn that I probably don’t want there anyway. Especially the June bugs. They can eat all of those they want. But in the process, they leave holes.
There are things you can use to get rid of the grubs. Things to add to the soil or even top dress the lawn with more soil to keep the grass healthier. But I don’t want to do anything to the crows.
I kind of like the crows. They may be noisy, but they are fairly friendly. And they need to eat, too. If I could only convince them to fill in the holes after they eat, we would get along just fine.
In the meantime, I guess I’ll just put up with the holes.
