A local prom night for the special needs community has been delayed until spring.
The Hope Wesleyan Church in Shelburne were supposed to put on the ‘Illuminate’ event last week, but COVID restrictions forced a postponement to April 9th.
Pastor Joanne Ozon says it may be a blessing in disguise.
“We are so excited, the weather will be a bit warmer as well, so it worked out great. Whatever COVID restrictions will be in place at that time will be what’s followed, everyone will need proof of vaccination,” says Ozon.
It’s the first event of its kind to be held in Nova Scotia.
Ozon says she got the idea after taking her special needs brother to a similar event in New Brunswick.
The night will feature a red carpet, limo rides, paparazzi, and everyone will be crowned king and queen.
So far, Ozon says they’ve fundraised nearly $10,000 to prepare for the evening at the Shelburne Fire Hall.
“We’re going to continue to fundraise. We want to keep doing this every year, and have this celebration, and not make it a one-time event.”
She says they’re still looking for volunteers, and those interested can visit their Facebook page.
