A story popped up in my news feed the other day that really had me wondering about the future of mankind.
There is a company that wants to turn people into salami. Not real people. They just want to take a little piece of people, hopefully celebrities, culture the cells in a lab and grow them, then take those cells and turn them into salami. Not just any processed meat. They specify salami.
At first I thought it was a joke. But the company does exist and the website does seem real. It’s called Bite Labs. They are just getting started and although the idea seems a bit twisted, the technology seems like it could be for real.
There have been examples of lab grown meat. That’s really at the heart of this. You can take a few cells from an animal and grow them into something that can be consumed by humans. Their website claims it is cleaner and better for the environment than naturally grown meat. The plan is to grow some animal meat, and mix it with celebrity cells for the finished product. They even are starting to develop recipe ideas for potential celebrity sausage. What meats and spices would go with what person, that sort of thing.
At the moment, the website seems to be asking people to help out by sending messages to any celebrity they might like to have for dinner. And when they say “have for dinner” they really mean it. They have a few suggestions on their website, but I suppose you could approach anyone you might like to see on the menu. Doesn’t sound creepy at all, does it?
I’m all for trying to reduce my carbon footprint by maybe reducing my meat consumption a bit, but I don’t think I’m willing to go quite this far. I’m still not convinced plant based meat is a good idea, so I’m really not ready for lab grown meat. It just doesn’t seem right. And eating something that is grown from other people, that would be a no. In fact, that getting up to the top of my nope list.
Although maybe a bit of Anthony Hopkins with a side of fava beans and a nice chianti might not be so bad.
