Fire departments in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg continue to seek new volunteers.
Although the Municipally created a recruitment and retention strategy last year, there continues to be an ongoing recruitment struggle.
MODL Mayor, Carolyn Bolivar-Getson said having volunteer firefighters is extremely important in our communities.
“They’re actually our local heroes,” said Bolivar-Getson. “They’re the ones that answer the call day or night, they go into burning buildings when other people are running out. I can’t say enough good things about our fire service.”
She believes the struggle to recruit new members has to do with the amount of time and commitment it takes to become a firefighter.
“The time that it takes to train a volunteer firefighter is enormous,” explained Bolivar-Getson.”There’s many different courses of firefighter training that they need to take.”
She added that to be involved with your local fire department you don’t necessary have to be on the front lines.
Bolivar-Getson explained that even if you aren’t physically fit, or capable you can still join a fire department because there’s always something you can do within a department to help them with their everyday operations.
She said those looking to join or find out more can contact your local fire department.
