The new Oasis camping structures at Kejimkujik. Photo: Parks Canada
Have you seen them? They new Oasis camping pods that have been installed in many national parks, including Kejimkujik?
At first, they may look a bit strange. In fact it looks like someone hung a large onion in a tree. But they are actually on stilts and are pretty nice looking.
I have camped a bit over the years, but I’m not a fanatic camper. An experience or two with ants and maybe the occasional rain storm and a flooded campsite, and that’s pretty much enough. I like the concept, but the shine has gone off the actual experience, if you know what I mean.
But these things. They look totally cool.
You’re up in the air, so no concerns about flooding or insects that maybe you didn’t see when you set up your tent. There is a door, so a bear is unlikely to crawl in your sleeping bag next to you. There are windows, giving a lovely view. And there is a little sort of hammock area for the second floor.
The only down side that I have been able to see is that these things are not portable. You wouldn’t be able to just toss it in your canoe and set it up where you want. But they just look so cool.
I may have to give one a try.
I need an Oasis.
