Riverport school is set to be demolished this summer.
The tender for the demolition of Riverport School has been awarded.
The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg has approved a tender for Halifax’s Leading Edge Excavation and Trucking to the tune of $131,800.
While the municipality has never worked for the company, they completed a similar job involving a school in Sheet Harbour.
The tender includes the demolition of the facility, and the remediation of the site.
However, it will not include additional costs which will be billed to the Municipality, such as $38,745 plus HST in consulting fees for a report from STRUM Consulting Ltd, and also tipping fees for C&D materials.
“That’s just the lumber and roofing and other construction debris, which is going to the MJSB (Community Recycling Centre),” said Stephen Pace, director of engineering for MODL at Tuesday’s meeting.
“That won’t be a huge number, I don’t have an estimate on that, but it would be under $100,000 I’d expect.”
It also doesn’t include costs for additional materials beyond the initial amount in the site assessment reports.
The tipping fees were removed from the tender in favour of billing the municipality directly, said Pace, because as part owners of the Municipal Joint Services Board facility, they would get a better rate than a contractor, thus reducing the cost.
The original budget, estimated by a ‘Costing Proposal for Regulatory Closure Options’ report by STRUM Consulting LTD, was set around $1.06 million.
MODL had been approved for a provincial/federal grant of $794,000 for the project, but with the lower cost, the actual amount is expected to be much less.
“It’s roughly 73 per cent of the value of the project, so I expect the grant would just be a percentage based on that,” said Pace.
After additional costs, Pace estimates it will cost around $300,000.
Work is expected to wrap up in September.
