It’s been a tough month for a lot of us, with many workers around the South Shore experiencing layoffs or reduced hours. Applications for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) are now open, but you may be able to receive some support from the province of Nova Scotia.
The Worker Emergency Bridge was launched by the provincial government recently. The goal is to help Nova Scotians who have been laid off after March 16th (or if you are self employed and your profits have taken a big hit because of COVID-19).
In basic terms, this is the provincial equivalent of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). The Worker Emergency Bridge is a one-time payment of $1,000 for Nova Scotians who are laid off or out of work because of COVID-19, who don’t qualify for Employment Insurance, and earn between $5,000 and $34,000.
Here are some of the basic details:
If you were laid off or out of work on or after 16 March 2020 because of COVID-19 and you aren’t eligible for Employment Insurance, you may be eligible for the Worker Emergency Bridge.
The Worker Emergency Bridge is a one-time $1,000 payment to help you meet your basic needs as soon as possible. It can be combined with the CERB. The payment also counts as taxable income and you’ll need to include it on your 2020 tax return.
