Teachers on the South Shore are taking education outside.
Two schools in the region began the year by unveiling their new outdoor classrooms.
Pentz Elementary and Bluenose Academy students will be spending some of their days in structures, something teacher Kajtek Jaskowiak says changes the approach to learning.
“It allows them to have that little spark of excitement when they see something they wouldn’t normally see in a classroom. It really instills that love of learning and that excitement you may not get in alternate environment like an indoor classroom.”
Jaskowiak says the structures challenge his coworkers to find new ways to present their lessons to students.
“Often times teachers just use it as a home base and then base their lesson outside around the shelter. Then, maybe come back to do a final wrap-up or de-brief to close up that lesson.”
Jaskowiak says moving studies outside can help keep students engaged but also keeps teachers involved in their own life-long learning.
He says the schools are grateful for the support they received from the community to get the classrooms built.
