Ever tried a good, sharp cheddar cheese on your apple pie? It’s truly delicious! But it’s a dying trend.
Apple pie with cheese is a thing some of the first settlers from Yorkshire in Northern England brought over with them. In England they used a popular local cheese called Wensleydale but had to substitute a good sharp Cheddar on our shores.
The pockets of North America where cheese on apple pie is considered normal are the places with a lot of dairy farms – New England, the Midwest, and the Canadian prairie provinces along with some small pockets here in the Maritimes.
Why cheese and not ice cream? Back in the old days freezers weren’t common so that ruled out ice cream, and before the introduction of sweeter apples like the Red Delicious the apples were less sweet, almost bland tasting. A sharp cheddar was just the thing to perk it up! It’s only been the in the last 60 years that ice cream has replaced cheese as the best apple pie topping.
