An expert panel has been asked to advise Nova Scotia’s Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development on safety in school sports.
The 17-member panel will provide its expertise on ways to prevent and reduce injuries, including head injuries, in school sports.
Zach Churchill says every player involved in sport knows there are risks.
“There’s always going to be a certain amount of risk for injury. We want to make sure that we’re mitigating that risk as best as we can from a policy and regulation standpoint.”
That decision was later reversed by Churchill.
He’s hoping to avoid that situation by creating a new policy.
“Well we’ve got a tight turnaround on this so we’re going to be moving as quickly and efficiently as possible. We want to get these measures in place for the fall which is why we’ve given this group such an ambitious agenda and timeline this summer.”
During their two days of meetings last week, the panel also looked at strategies that promote safety and injury prevention.
They will meet twice more this summer before presenting their report to the minister by August 31st.
