What was once an abandoned gravel pit and wood lot is the latest public space in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.
A grand opening event is planned for River Ridge Common Park in New Germany.
The park has been transformed over the past two years to include environmental art, waterways and picnic area.
Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says she expects the park will be a staple in the community.
“It’s got different things naturally put in from stepping logs coming up hills to a slide to a tunnel to crawl through under a bridge. It’s a beautiful setting.”
The park is 115 acres and includes two kilometres of trail, some of which was built by high school students in New Germany.
“We’re thinking it is one of the largest outdoor playgrounds in Atlantic Canada,” says Bolivar-Getson.
“It utilizes land on both sides of the rail bed.”
The grand opening will be held Saturday at 2pm at 4668 Highway 10 in New Germany.
