Just a reminder, once again this year people have been spotting signs of trichomonosis, a parasite that can be fatal to birds. It seems to particularly effect many of the smaller birds like finches and can be spread by contact with infected birds at feeders and bird baths.
I love having the birds around, but it’s not worth taking chances with their health. So once again this year, as for the past couple of years, my feeders have come down and will be put away until it gets colder. The parasite apparently doesn’t do well with freezing temperatures, so it is safe to feed our feathered friends over the winter. Not so much in the summer.
So if you haven’t done it yet, we are being asked to take down feeders and bird baths, clean them well and put them away until cooler temperatures prevail.
