Bridgewater’s Keith Getson is settling in to the Halifax Mooseheads lineup after what he calls a significant change in his hockey career.
The 20 year-old was traded to Halifax from the Charlottetown Islanders last month after playing four-and-a-half years in PEI.
Getson says it’s a dream come true to play close to home.
“Growing up this was the team I cheered for. I came into the city every once in a while and watched games and the players I grew up watching like (Nathan) MacKinnon and (Jonathan) Drouin, they were my idols. Now I get to play on this team and wear the Mooseheads crest.”
Getson has also been reunited with defenceman Walter Flower of Lunenburg.
The two last played together in major bantam for the Western Hurricanes.
Getson has scored four goals and four assists in 12 games with the Mooseheads.
“I still want to be able to put the puck in the back of the net, which is what you want out of a forward but at the same time, I want to bring a veteran presence to the team. I’ve been in the third round two straight years and I have that playoff experience.”
He says it’s exciting to think about Halifax hosting the Memorial Cup, the Canadian Hockey League championship, in May.
But for now, he’s focused on the regular season and helping the Mooseheads try to win their second QMJHL title.
