There was an incident New Year’s Eve at the Southwest Nova Correctional Facility in Yarmouth.
In an email to our newsroom, RCMP media spokesperson Corporal Jennifer Clarke says the Yarmouth Town detachment is investigating an assault that occurred at the provincial lock-up at approximately 10 p.m. on December 31.
She says one correctional officer was assaulted by an inmate, and property in the facility was damaged.
No charges have been laid to date and the investigation is ongoing.
The provincial Department of Justice, in an email, told CJLS News “On Monday, December 31, at approximately 10:00 pm, there was an incident involving two inmates at the Southwest Nova Scotia Correctional Facility. A Correctional Officer was assaulted and damage was sustained to property including TV, video game equipment and sprinkler heads as result of the incident. Sprinkler heads have since been replaced. Damage is estimated at $3200.00.
