Lunenburg town councillors are questioning recent tax law changes that will see their compensation drop.
Beginning in January, elected municipal officials across the country will lose their one-third income tax exemption.
Mayor Rachel Bailey says that means councillors will take a pay cut.
“Rural municipal councillors don’t make a lot of money, and we’re not in it for the money. But it’s a bonus that there are honourariums paid for the services we provide.”
Mayor Rachel Bailey worries the claw-back by the federal government could lead to fewer people offering to run for councils across the country.
She says council felt they had to respond.
“A change has been made that negatively impacts our service and in some ways, seems to disrespect what we do. So I think we just resolved to make that concern known to our federal colleagues.”
That concern will be expressed in the form of a letter being sent to the area’s MP.
Below is table presented to council on the changes to salaries.
