A beach in western Nova Scotia was closed to swimming yesterday after a shark was spotted.
There were several sightings of a tell-tale dorsal fin yesterday in waters just off Port Maitland beach.
Karen Bullerwell was at the beach.
” it was around 4 o’clock. I was playing in the water with my daughter. It was quite foggy and I noticed a lifeguard walking up behind me and she had said they just spotted two fins in the water, so we turned around and they were pretty close to us so we started walking out of the water.”
Paul d’Eon of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service says they took action immediately.
“Our policy is, you know, we’re not sure what this thing is. We close the beach for two hours and keep looking. We always err on the side of caution.”
d’Eon says they were unable to identify the type of shark.
“They don’t sit and pose for you. We try and get videos and we try and identify the type of shark but it’s very difficult.”
He says they haven’t noticed much of an increase in shark sightings at beaches supervised by the life guard service.
“We always advise that the risk of being injured by a shark is extremely low. In fact, we also say that driving to the beach is much more dangerous than any shark you’ll see at the beach.”
