A little farm in Middle Cornwall has big goals for helping their community out.
Tracy and Orrin Murdoch of Mirella Rose Farm are raising money to grow fresh food for the Mahone Bay Food Bank.
Tracy is originally from Alaska and Orrin is from BC.
Both changed careers and moved to the area, starting their small farm in 2010.
They currently cater to just over a dozen families in the form of a weekly food box.
Tracy says they were inspired by a story of two farmers in Northern Ontario who also dropped their city jobs to start farming.
“And part of what they ended up doing, and do in their business now, is provide food to a place called ‘The Stop’ in Toronto.”
The Stop is a community food centre.
Tracy says now that their business model is working and things have settled down, they wanted to find a way to share with their community.
“And wanting to find ways to just expand with how we can share in a way that helps people.”
The pair started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover costs.
The goal was for $1,500 and in just seven days they’ve raised over $1,100.
Tracy says they’ll give fruit, veggies, and eggs to the food bank seasonally, every two weeks starting this spring.
Anything that isn’t used will go to Souls Harbour soup kitchen in Bridgewater.
