Trees will be the cause of celebration in Queens County. The first annual Dogwood Festival goes Saturday in Liverpool. The Region of Queens received federal funding in 2000 to celebrate the millennium. They took some of the money and subsidized the cost of Korean Dogwood trees and sold roughly 800 of them locally. Mayor Chris Clarke says their dream was to hold a festival once the trees grew. After 14 years, it will happen this weekend. He feels it’s a unique idea, saying “The more we can celebrate, the more tastes we can appeal to, the more different people we bring to the community and it’s all good for the community, both for community pride and to support the merchants.” The Queens Garden Club and the Mersey Band are coordinating the event at Trinity Anglican Church.
