Sailors from around the globe have made their way to the Lunenburg Yacht Club.
The 2017 Sonar World Championships are underway until Sunday.
More than 20 boats are involved including Nova Scotians Sandy MacMillan and Glenn Dexter.
Commodore Michael O’Connor says there are a few other names of interest.
“Paul Tingley, who along with Scott Lukes, will be racing. They won bronze in the paralympics in Rio. Andreas Josenhans is a past America’s Cup and world champion winner.”
The regatta will be using the app “Race Q’s” to post instant results and a virtual simulation of each race for viewers.
Once this championship wraps up, the club will then host the Sail Canada Women’s Keelboat Championships from September 13-17.
O’Connor says it’s an exciting time.
“For me personally, it means the opportunity to compete against some of the best sailors and the next week I won’t be competing because it’s a ladies keelboat championship but as a father of two daughters I’m very happy about it because I see a great many women getting far, far more involved in sailing.”
Racing has been postponed Thursday due to high winds and will resume Friday.
