Free Bicycle Program Back For Fifth Year

An annual program that gets children on two wheels is underway.

The United Way of Lunenburg County's Bikes For Kids collects bicycles all year for volunteers to repair.

Michael Graves with the United Way says they are then turned over to kids who may not otherwise get one.

"The child poverty rate in Lunenburg County is about 22 percent. There's a lot of kids that are going without and the United Way is all about creating opportunities for kids and families and youth. And this is one very inexpensive way to do that."

Graves says when they started this project five years ago there were 300 bikes just sitting around.

"And all we've done is repurposed them, given them new life. And given kids who can't afford it new adventures, new outdoor adventures - love it."

Members of the O'Regan Subaru Cycling Team, students in the Diesel Repair program at NSCC Lunenburg Campus and Park View CAMS students have spent time in the past year fixing up the donated bikes.
