Park View Basketball teams are playing today in honour of a former coach.
It’s the second annual Bruce Sarty Memorial Bursary Fundraising Game.
All money raised goes to a bursary for student-athletes who play soccer or basketball.
For Varsity Boy’s Head Coach Matt Sarty it has a special meaning.
With Bruce’s passing Park View lost a coach, but Matt lost a father.
“I feel like it would be something he would be proud of and something he would be glad that we’re keeping going,” he says.
“And that’s he’s still giving back even though he’s not here with us anymore.”
Manager Jamie Mason says the bursary is in honour of Bruce and his dedication to sports, particularly with Park View.
Bruce coached soccer and basketball, and so that’s why student-athletes playing either, or both of those sports, are eligible for the bursary.
“A community member had put some money forward to have a bursary for a one-time thing,” he says.
“And then we thought it would be a good idea to do these games to recognize his contribution to the sport.”
Junior and Varsity teams will be taking on Forest Heights, Shelburne Regional and Sackville High today.
Admission to the games is by donation.
