Sailors in Lunenburg will be waiting a while longer to get their boats in the water.
Construction of the new boat launch on Broad Street began in March, but was halted after contaminated soil was found on the site.
Tests showed higher than normal levels of hydrocarbons and metals in the soil.
Town Engineer Marc Belliveau says the soil needs to be properly disposed of before work can continue.
“The delays have been in the testing, getting results from the sampling, and then sending that information to the disposal sites to see if they’re willing to accept the material and treat the materials.”
Mayor Rachel Bailey says council still needs to decide how they are going to finish the project.
“We may need to stall the project to do things in a piece-meal manner as opposed to going ahead with the full thing this year. If we just have to bite the bullet and if that looks like it’s the best option then we’ll go ahead.”
A disposal site has been found and Belliveau says once the budget is approved, the soil can be removed.
It will then be a matter of weeks before the new launch will be ready for the public.
