A national land conservation organization says a new report reinforces the need for private land protection.
In particular, the Nature Conservancy of Canada says it specifically applies to forests, wetlands, salt marshes and floodplains.
The report, from the Insurance Bureau of Canada, calls on governments and communities to take action against the risks and impacts of climate change by mitigating floods.
Andrew Holland of the Conservancy tells Acadia News communities also need to look at the importance of wetlands.
“They absorb water and act like a sponge and hold it and slow it down from washing pout our bridges and culverts. These are things that are right under our noses.”
He says floods, droughts and polluted water sends a strong message that we need to think about water more.
Holland says severe weather is happening regularly now and not every 100 years.
