An investigation continues into the seizure of lobsters in Digby County.
Earlier this month inspectors with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans seized more than $50,000 worth of lobster from a seafood distributor in New Edinburgh.
The department says fisheries officers from the Meteghan detachment inspected the fish distribution facility on August 9 and seized more than 100 crates of lobster.
Chris Sperry, DFO’s area chief of conservation and protection for southwestern Nova Scotia, tells Acadia News they are vigilant in protecting the resource.
“Our focus this year has been really putting a high visibility presence of officers out there to really ensure protection of fisheries and long-term sustainability of fisheries in South West Nova.”
Sperry says the lobsters were seized based on the belief that they were purchased and sold without authorization in violation of the fisheries general regulations.
Meanwhile, fishery officers recently inspected two restaurants in Yarmouth which resulted in the seizure of a small amount of lobster meat from each location.
DFO says the restaurants were unable to verify the product was obtained legally.
